While guinea pigs might be larger than gerbils and hamsters, they are by no means larger than most other household pets. Soft and cuddly little creatures, guinea pigs are part of the family of rodents (along with gerbils and hamsters), and while larger, they are also much fluffier. Despite their name though, guinea pigs are not native to Guinea, nor are they biologically related to pigs, so the origin of the name is unclear.
The domestic guinea pig, also known as domestic cavy, originated in the Andes mountains of South America, and studies based on biochemistry and hybridization suggest they are domesticated descendants of a closely related species of cavy, and therefore do not exist naturally in the wild.
The domestic guinea pig has enjoyed widespread popularity as a pet since its introduction by European traders in the 16th century, mainly due to their docile nature and their friendly responsiveness to handling and feeding.
